Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling therapy uses a fine sterile needle to target myofascial trigger points in skeletal muscles. It is applied based on clinical assessment of pain, tightness, and movement limitation.

Overview

How It Works

Dry needling therapy works by inserting a very fine sterile needle into tight muscle bands known as trigger points. These trigger points often cause pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

The needle stimulates a local twitch response in the muscle. This response helps the muscle relax, improves blood flow, and reduces pain signals sent to the brain. As a result, the muscle function gradually returns to a more normal state.

Physiotherapists also combine dry needling with movement correction, stretching, and strengthening exercises to improve long-term outcomes and prevent the problem from returning.

All techniques are performed with the consent of the patient, after evaluating individual needs and discomfort tolerance.

Benefits

What You Can Expect

Faster muscle pain relief

Dry needling helps reduce muscle tightness and pain by releasing trigger points directly.

Improved movement and flexibility

It restores normal muscle length and improves joint mobility, allowing smoother movement.

Enhanced recovery from injury

The treatment increases blood flow and supports faster tissue healing, especially after sports or overuse injuries.

Reduced muscle tension and stiffness

It helps calm overactive muscles that contribute to chronic tightness and discomfort.

Better performance and function

Athletes and active individuals often experience improved muscle efficiency and reduced fatigue.

Your Experience

What to Expect

During the session, your physiotherapist first assesses the painful area and identifies tight or overactive muscles. You may feel a slight prick when the needle enters the skin, followed by a quick twitch or deep ache in the muscle.

After treatment, you may feel mild soreness similar to post-exercise fatigue. This usually settles within 24–48 hours. Most patients can return to normal daily activities immediately after the session.

Your physiotherapist will also guide you on hydration, stretching, and movement to support recovery.
